Porto, Portugal - On Aug. 26, an off-duty pilot on board of a Jet2.com plane helped the first officer in the cockpit to carry out an emergency landing after the captain got sick.
The unnamed off-duty pilot was flying from Manchester to Madeira in Portugal to spend his vacation when the incident happened.
The Boeing 757 of the British low-cost Jet2.com was diverted to Porto for an emergency landing. The runway of the Francisco de Sá Carneiro International Airport was closed to other flights for half an hour until the aircraft lands safely.
The off-duty pilot came forward from the back of the plane to offer help after an unspecified incident and flight diversion announcement.
The 40-year-old captain was wheeled off in a wheelchair with an oxygen mask after the aircraft landed, according to a passenger who spoke to British news portal "Mail Online".
The pilot was taken to hospital for medical care.
Flight LS765 from Manchester to Funchal diverted to Porto as a precautionary measure this morning, due to one of the pilots feeling unwell. A standby aircraft and replacement crew will be flown to Porto so that we can get customers on their way to Funchal as soon as possible,
the British carrier said in a statement after the emergency landing.
